While the Papillon is believed to be descended from the Continental Toy Spaniel or “dog of Spain”, its original ancestors have actually been traced to France.  It is frequently referred to as the “butterfly dog” as their beautiful ears can be erect (hence the name ‘Papillon' which is French for butterfly) or dropped (or 'Phalene', meaning night moth).

The Papillon is a very loyal and devoted animal.  Their hearty spirit make them extremely desirable for show ranking as one of the top dogs in obedience.  They are equally desirable as a family or individual companion pet as  they easily adapt to different situations and climates.  apt to almost any climate and are comfortable in an apartment as well as the country.

HEIGHT: 8—11 Inches

WEIGHT: 3—9 Pounds

COLORS:  White with patches of any color except liver.  Colors include: tri-colors, lemon, mahogany, and tan.

COAT: Long, abundant, flowing but without an undercoat.  It is soft and silky in texture.

TEMPERAMENT: Papillon’s are wonderful for apartment or small home living situation.  They are very sociable and attentive to their family.  Their extremely up-beat and enthusiastic personality make them an easy animal to be around. 

TEMPERAMENT W/CHILDREN: Good with children

TEMPERAMENT W/OTHER PETS: Good w/cats and other small dogs.  May challenge bigger dogs.

GROOMING REQUIREMENTS:

·         Weekly brushing of the coat

·         Trimming of the pads of the feet to prevent splaying of the feet

·         Nail trimming (1x weekly)

·         Teeth cleaning (2x – 3x’s weekly)

·         Bathing (monthly/as needed)

TRAINING REQUIREMENTS:  Like all dogs, Papillon’s require structure and training.  As they are very intelligent they are easily trained.  Socialization in puppy classes is recommended.

EXERCISE: Papillon’s are primarily an indoor dog but love to go on walks. 

HEALTH ISSUES: Comparatively speaking, Papillon’s have few health issues. However, the following health issues have been identified and need to be screened for when purchasing a dog from a reputable breeder:

·         Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA)

·         Luxating Patellas

·         Inadequate tear production

LIFE SPAN:  Papillon’s are a long-lived breed and have an average life span of 13-16 years.
